# Payment Recovery

Dunning emails, smart retries and a payment wall that recover failed payments automatically.

## What Payment Recovery is

Involuntary churn happens when a card expires, is declined or hits a limit, and the subscription lapses without the customer ever deciding to leave. Payment Recovery watches every failed invoice and works to get it paid:

1 Payment fails Customer Nothing yet; most customers do not know their card failed. Churn Solution Detects the failed invoice from your gateway and enrols it in recovery. Overview →
2 Smart retries Customer Nothing to do; the charge is retried quietly. Churn Solution Re-attempts the charge at the moments most likely to succeed, up to your retry limit. Smart retries →
3 Dunning emails Customer Receives a branded email with an update-card link, and optionally a recovery discount. Churn Solution Sends the sequence on schedule and stops it the moment the invoice is paid. Dunning emails →
4 Payment Wall Customer Sees an in-app prompt at login to update the card; soft at first, then blocking after the grace period. Churn Solution Updates the payment method inline and resumes the subscription. Payment Wall →
5 Recovered Customer Keeps using the product. Churn Solution Marks the invoice recovered and reports it in Analytics. Analytics →

Emails and retries run on separate schedules and are tracked together per invoice in **Payment Recovery Attempts**.

## Getting started

Payment Recovery needs a connected gateway that supports it — Stripe, WooCommerce or Paid Memberships Pro — and a domain for the emails and the hosted recovery pages, which the team sets up for you via DNS. Once the gateway is connected, failed invoices appear under **Payment Recovery** in the dashboard automatically, and you switch on each channel from there: build your [dunning email](/docs/payment-recovery/dunning-emails/) campaigns, enable [smart retries](/docs/payment-recovery/smart-retries/), and add the [Failed Payment Wall](/docs/subscription-walls/). The exact steps for your gateway are on its page.

## Gateway support

Where Payment Recovery is available and how it works on each gateway.

| Gateway | Status | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| [Stripe](/docs/integrations/stripe/) | ✓ | Payment Recovery gives you three tools for failed Stripe payments: [dunning emails](/docs/payment-recovery/dunning-emails/), [smart retries](/docs/payment-recovery/smart-retries/) and the [Payment Wall](/docs/subscription-walls/). Each one is configured in the dashboard — the [steps on the Stripe page](/docs/integrations/stripe/#stripe-pr) show how to switch them on; the details of each tool live in the Payment Recovery section. |
| [Braintree](/docs/integrations/braintree/) | – | Not available on Braintree today. Failed-payment emails, smart retries and the payment wall rely on gateway features Braintree does not expose. Ask the team if you need this. |
| [Paddle](/docs/integrations/paddle/) | – | Payment Recovery is not available on Paddle yet. If you need it for your Paddle subscriptions, contact the team. |
| [Revolut](/docs/integrations/revolut/) | – | Payment Recovery is not available on Revolut yet. If you need it for your Revolut subscriptions, contact the team. |
| [Recurpay](/docs/integrations/recurpay/) | – | Payment Recovery is not available on Recurpay yet. If you need it for your store, contact the team. |
| [WooCommerce](/docs/integrations/wordpress/woocommerce/) | ✓ | Failed WooCommerce renewal orders enrol the customer in dunning emails and smart retries, and the Failed Payment Wall can gate your site until the payment method is updated. Prepaid plans in an on-hold state are handled too. |
| [Paid Memberships Pro](/docs/integrations/wordpress/paid-memberships-pro/) | ✓ | Dunning emails and smart retries run against the Stripe account behind PMPro. The Pause Wall and Failed Payment Wall need no code: contact the team and we enable and configure them for your site. |
